Even though most of the German nations united under one banner, I still call the German Unification unsusccessful, since the resistance by the Hapsburg, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. The Netherlands and Switzerland were always different, it was always sure that they would resist William I. You simply just can't create a unitary German(ish) state with such weirdos as the Dutch and the Swiss.
Regarding the Italian peninsula, I am glad Two Sicilies resisted Sardinia. I am perfectly happy with five Italian states (Two Sicilies, Sardinia-Piedmont, the Roman Republic, San Marino and the Republic of Venice). However I find it funny that the pope had to escape to Avignon because of the republican revolutionaries and that the RR survived, even though it was unlikely, but thanks to Two Sicilies they did. It sure helps Rome as a city, since Papal control was never good for it.
But it was kind of messy travelling there before the establishment of the European League...
