DBWI: Germany and Italian Unifications successful?

Patently silly, the German empire had enough trouble bringing Bavaria on board, there's no chance they'd get the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Sudetenland and Austria in one polity!

;).

Even though most of the German nations united under one banner, I still call the German Unification unsusccessful, since the resistance by the Hapsburg, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. The Netherlands and Switzerland were always different, it was always sure that they would resist William I. You simply just can't create a unitary German(ish) state with such weirdos as the Dutch and the Swiss.

Regarding the Italian peninsula, I am glad Two Sicilies resisted Sardinia. I am perfectly happy with five Italian states (Two Sicilies, Sardinia-Piedmont, the Roman Republic, San Marino and the Republic of Venice). However I find it funny that the pope had to escape to Avignon because of the republican revolutionaries and that the RR survived, even though it was unlikely, but thanks to Two Sicilies they did. It sure helps Rome as a city, since Papal control was never good for it.

But it was kind of messy travelling there before the establishment of the European League...

I could see Germany, but Italy is impossible. The Two Sicilies are simply too distinct from Northern Italians (which they will tell you to this day) to stay in a unified state.

If both succeeded in uniting, then you would have a German-Italian dominated Continent. Think about it: both would be fairly liberal states, having been formed out of the corpses of the old conservative-dominated monarchies, so they would be natural allies. Together, they have something like 2-3 times the population of France, so they'd win any war against France through sheer numbers. And Russia was too backwards at this time to do anything serious to stop them. You'd have a German-Italian wank within 30-40 years.

Well, for one, the Hapsburgs wouldnt have carved out their huge empire spanning most of South Eastern Europe, which means no Revolution so ultimately no United States of Europe. Maybe the South Slavs would form their own states?

Well for one thing Colonialism and the Scramble for Africa would be very different from OTL. A totally Unified Germany might be able gain more of a share of the pie than OTL's Congo and a few lousy concessions in China. Possibly a good target would be the East African Sultanates (who in OTL were never exactly pro British) or South West Africa (where there is still a large German Expat pop to this day).

As for a unified Italy, Sicily only just managed to take Tripolitania from the Ottomans as it was and then it lost it so easily to Greece during the Great War. A unified Italy however might take more of an interest in Africa and Asia than the Italian States in OTL. Somaliland and East Africa in has always seamed like a good candidate to me. in OTL, the Sicilians did have good trading relations with the local rulers until the Belgians came and ruined the show. Maybe a unified Italy might also make an attempt at Tunisia due to it's large Italian Settler pop, but that would probably mean a major war with France.

Oh, this also brings up another topic, how would a fully unified Germany and a fully unified Italy affect Scandinavian Unification? And if that still happens as OTL, would the Anglo - Scandinavian Union still occur?

Anyway, that's just my input.

You've got to get rid of the Congress system earlier somehow, either a major war or revolution. Preferably a series of revolutions. Otherwise, the conservative monarchies will steamroll the revolutionary states over and over, as we saw in 1872.
