DBWI: German unifacation?

when the USSR fell and the Eastern Block opened up there was a lot of talk of uniting East and West Germany, but the Russians were very much against it (hard feelings from WWII) also it seems that the UK's Government under Thatcher and the French Government under Mittterrand were also very against it (behind closed doors) is there any way to over come these anti-unification forces? maybe if West Germany was under a CDU Chancellor would have pushed the issue, what would a united Germany look like?

Personally, I suspect a re-unified Germany would have gone badly; how long do you think it would take for the militarists to get back in power and start causing trouble again? They're already stiring things up in East Germany OTL, after all...

I think it would have been a disaster if it had been rushed through in the space of a year or so. Can you imagine the economic implications? Whose currency gets shafted? Why should the Bonn government have to suddenly take responsibility for the massive vacuum of jobs in the East because of the departure of the state sector?

No, lunacy. I think that reason above all else would mean that the pro-unification sentimentalists would never win, in any universe. The Germans are far too sensible a bunch these days.

I'm unsure, a democratic East Germany (Republic of Eastern Germany) came into being more or less broke with a wide open border and having a flood of the best and brightest running as fast as they can to West Germany, I mean it was 1995 before any try to close the border, maybe West German money and no brain-drain (or a brain drain into the same nation) would keep East Germany out of OTL issues, or not

OOC/IC: Jesus Christ. Unification or no: There never was nor will there ever be a Fourth Reich!

OOC: That idea really pisses me off, sorry.

*leaves thread, never to come back*

I remember something about rumors that both the Thatcher and Mitterrand governments threatening military action if Germany tried to unify.

That would make an awesome TL.

Its not going to happen for economic reasons, east germany was incredibly poor there is no way that western germany is going to willingly take on a economic liability of that size. Heck even to this day the democratic republic of germany has a lower GDP then its western counterpart.

But that's only because the "brain drain," economic drain, and everything else left East Germany without any other visible options - and even so, they haven't actually gotten into power yet, and even if they did, they wouldn't be able to do much of anything with a powerful EU having a vested interest in the current order. In a reunified Germany including the powerful West German economy, I don't think they'd get anywhere near power, ever.

Every one plays up the DNP because its German, and its scary that they're the Second party but they're no worse than other far-right/anti-immigration parties in Europe, if they get elected we'll likely see a lot of blow hard bullying law passed against the 5 muslims in East Germany

Lech Wałęsa was very much pro unification. He was in very good relation with Helmut Kohl. I think if Germans really wanted to unify, nobody in Europe would deny them. The problem was IMHO that the Western Germans found out about Stasi and the level of indoctrination of their eastern cousins. They basically said: "We'll wait and see how you manage your confidents, your secret police and your economy", and the Eastern Germans felt upset. At least that was the expanation offered in Polish media. Right now Western Germans say to the Eastern that they can join now when the economy is good and the easterners tell them "Screw you, we managed on our own and we will live on our own". Considering that the growth of western economy is about 2-2,5 percent by year and eastern is growing 5-6 percent yearly, I'm not that surprised.

Well it would have been better if Germany was somewhat unified in the beginning by letting the Russians only take the Eastern parts that they gave to Poland and occupy them instead and UK, France and US occupy the current borders of Germany.
