DBWI: German athletics not denazified.

After WW2 as part of the denazification of the German people organised sport was heavily targeted due to its association with Nazi propaganda of the Aryan super race, because of this when compared with the rest of the continent German athletics is quite stunted when it comes to founding, total participation, the number of qualified couches, and the fact that during the cold war none the germanies competed in any major international sport competition in fear that it might spark undesired nationalism to the point that it wasn't until Atlanta that Germany competed in the Olympics for the first time in 60 years.

1.So what POD/s is needed for German athletics to be at same level as its neighbours.

2.If German Athletics wasn't target could they have won or hosted something big like the World cup.

Just focus on the woirld cup heres as soccer is more my area.

Hosted maybe, it's a big and rich country and while there isn't a sporting culture now there's no reason why they couldn't be a strong fan base in an alternate ttl.

Won: Unlikely, you've got to remember even in the heart of the nazi era the best 'german' players and teams were austrian. See rapid vienna winning the 1941 german championship, for instance. The 'Danube School' of football in austria, italy and hungary was miles ahead of their northern neighbours. And the fact that the german championship in the nazi and pre nazi era was not a national league but a series of small regional groups shows how far in organisation the germans were from the likes of the italians or the hungarians for instance.

Best case scenario you'd get a team like otl swedes. There and there about but still a step below the likes of the soviets and the italians at the crunch. More likely you'd get another bunch of northern european also rans to fight out with the danes and scots for the last european qualifying place.

The best thing about a german sport timeline is it would kill the whole annoying as hell 'sleeping giant' ideas that infects soccer forums. They'd probably just start talking up getting the chinese or the yanks into the sport instead, though.
