IOTL, George Washington was initially unwilling to accept the title King, but his good friend and eventual Financial Minister Alexander Hamilton convinced him the country needed him to be its king. What if Hamilton hadn’t convinced him to be King George I of the United American Empire? Part of Hamilton’s genius system he came up with was the “electoral college,” in which each state would elect either 1,2, or 3 electors depending upon population size who would vote for the new king from the Ministers of the dead king. How would this alt-government be organized? Is it possible the alt-constitution would have implemented some division between the judicial, executive, and legislative powers, instead of the unified monarchy we see today? Would we see far more republics, perhaps even in countries like France and Germany, if there was the example of a republic in America?
