DBWI: George Washington lives?

As we all know, Revolutionary War hero and general George Washington died in a tragic horseback riding incident in the summer of 1788. What if General Washington survived? I heard that he was a possible candidate for the presidential election later in the year, could he have become the President? How would he handle the office?

It may have strengthened the role and avoided that horrible mess that necessitated a replacement by the Triune Presidency.
Or he may have strengthened the role too much so that it became a kingship in all but name.

I don't know, with a president willing to take strong and decisive action the secession of New England to Canada, where it remains to his day, might have been avoided, but at the same time a military man in the presidency might have angered the country enough to promote discontent in for example the Deep South, which after The Great Crisis remained the most loyal part of the Union.

Historical Note

The Prussian historian, Herr Doktor Heinrich Kissinger, in his seven volume look at Pre-Crisis America (the definitive work) notes [Vol III, Chapt. 17, Section 5], that Washington having no issue, the matter of kingship may have been impossible.
OTOH, in his brief essay, The Vital Center, Schlesinger claims -- with Washington -- an elective kingship for a 20 year term (to life) might have evolved rather than the mess the Yanks currently labour under.

We've seen how bad it is when military dictators take over after a revolution, and I just can't see Washington making post-revolution USA any better. Probably an earlier Monarchist movement, or just a longer dictatorship period.

He didn't want the job.

He had dealt with a Congress during the war and had had enough.

The most likely thing would be him being the power behind the scene.

The "Old Wise Man" who people went to for suggestions and advice.

You may see some of his favorites in highly placed positions.

He would just spend his last years happy on his farm for the most part.
