DBWI: George Wallace not elected president in '68?

(OOC: I never have done an alt-history timeline before and so I kind of bungled my last toying with this idea. I hope I'll be allowed to try this again.)

As it says on the tin. It really is quite ridiculous how badly Humphrey campaigned this year, unpopular as Johnson was and as much as the party was falling apart, there was still a very powerful apparatus in the unions and city machines and it was utterly neglected. He managed to get a majority of disgruntled blue-collar workers up north, for god's sake. Unthinkable as early as '66. Still, I don't think there's any way Humphrey could have won. Nixon may have had a shot if he didn't pick that idiot Agnew or if they managed to keep that huge scandal under wraps.

So what would have happened? The big one of course is no President LeMay after Wallace ate a Black Panther bullet in '71, which will have...interesting effects.

If Humphrey gets the nomination, Nixon wins and self destructs halfway through his first term.

OOC: From your initial writeup, I can't quite tell if Wallace won the Democratic nomination or won as a third party candidate.
