DBWI George Wallace is a prominent segregationist?

I don't know if you've heard of George Wallace -- he was a judge (and, for a time, a state representative) from Alabama who became a quite major figure in the civil rights movement in the 1960s (though he's become overshadowed in history by other such figures of the time). The interesting thing to me is that it took until the 1960s for him to really become committed to civil rights and desegregation -- before that, even though the NAACP did endorse him in 1958 when he ran for Governor of Alabama (and lost, of course), he was pretty much a moderate for the time on racial matters.

I'm just interested to see if there's a way for his politics to swing the other way just as sharply.

(OOC: The NAACP actually did endorse George Wallace in OTL for his run for governor in 1958, which he lost.)

From what I know of the little known Wallace he was a very energetic and charismatic campaigner. Now say if he were a staunch segregationist, his campaigning ability would have meant he would have been able to woo the South more successfully than Governor Lester Maddox's ill-fated campaign for the Presidency in 1968. Even the possibility remains that Wallace could have forced the election to the House of Representatives. However, what's the point of playing such parlour games when Nixon swept a vast majority of the South to such an extent that the Democrats may never be able to achieve such a feat again?
