I don't know if you've heard of George Wallace -- he was a judge (and, for a time, a state representative) from Alabama who became a quite major figure in the civil rights movement in the 1960s (though he's become overshadowed in history by other such figures of the time). The interesting thing to me is that it took until the 1960s for him to really become committed to civil rights and desegregation -- before that, even though the NAACP did endorse him in 1958 when he ran for Governor of Alabama (and lost, of course), he was pretty much a moderate for the time on racial matters.
I'm just interested to see if there's a way for his politics to swing the other way just as sharply.
