What if Vice President George HW Bush who was the favorite to win the 88 Republican Nomination who would go on to lose the republican nomination to Bob Dole who I thought ran a campaign that did a good job mixing being a moderate with being a conservative.

What if Bush ran a better campaign and actually went on to sweep the primaries instead to losing momentum after New Hampshire?

Though at least Bush became the Secretary of State for the next 8 years

I don't see much difference unless he was drinking the Reagan Kool-Aid. Bush was pretty moderate as well, and I think he would have been wise to leave the tax codes alone as Dole did. He's also a veteran, so I'm sure he would have been just as firm with Saddam. Either way, he gets re-elected handily as Dole did, and I'm pretty sure the streak of GOP presidents would be over in '96 because Gephardt was facing a weakling either way.

I do wonder if Bush's son would have bought the Texas Rangers if his dad became President. Maybe he would have tried his hand at politics instead, though from the looks of the Rangers, if his politics are anything like his baseball management, we dodged a bullet. He traded Alex Rodriguez for what?

What was he thinking trading A Rod back to the Mariners? I think they got back an aging Edgar Martinez
