FUN FACTS ABOUT ITALY
The Confederation of Italy is the only state in which the role of Head of State is shared by a council of several individuals (1). To make things even more nearly ASB, the people who are in this council can be either hereditary monarchs or elected "Presidents" (2).
(1) The council is called "High Council of Italy" and has almost only ceremonial value. But in their respective confederal states, the members act as proper Heads of State with various powers according to the local Constitutions.
(2) They are: King of Sardinia, King of Tavolara, Doge of Genoa, Prince of Seborga, Duke of Milan, Doge of Venice, Rector of Ragusa, Duke of Parma, Duke of Modena, Duke of Massa, Duke of Lucca, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Consul of Latium (2), Duke of Adriazia, Captain Regent of San Marino (2), Prince of Pontecorvo, Prince of Benevento, King of Naples, King of Sicily.
The duty of having diplomatic encounters with foreign Heads of State is selected by lot among the members of the High Council, as is the role of chief of the Armed Forces.
The High Council had the Pope himself as one of its members from 1831 to 1991, when the Pope, John Paul I, voluntarily renounced to his seat. Current Pope Benedict XVI has made clear that the Church has renounced to secular power altogether. (ATL Popes, obviously).
Eritrea, Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan voted to remain part of Italy as Associated States instead of becoming independent. There is a sizeable movement in Eritrea who longs for complete statehood and a seat in the High Council. A referendum in 2015 will settle the question.
