DBWI: Fremont lost to Buchanan in 1856

What if Fremont lost Pennsylvania and Illinois to Buchanan in 1856? How different would the US be without the infamous secessionist government of Montgomery and the events that followed? The main thing I can think is that slavery would have ended differently. Another thing that could be interesting to see is a GOP that supported tariffs and opposed expansion into the Caribbean.

Well maybe the United States would still be, you know, "United". Frémont was an idiot who thought he was a military genius. His meddling in military affairs is largely sited as a major reason the Confederacy won its independence. As for slavery, had Frémont had his way, he would have forcibly ended the practice at the point of the bayonet rather than allowing the CSA to end the practice on their own accord in the 1890s.

The Confederacy hardly “won.” With the election of moderate Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the North decided to allow the South to secede despite the fact the frontlines were deep in the South

It is still a laughable stock of the world economically, socially and politically, well into the 21st century. It has over 70 million in population and is still out of the world's top 10 economies.

OOC: a North American equivalent of a Latin America Banana Republic. Oh, and both Texas and Cali are still in the USA.
