DBWI: Franz Ferdinand killed in Sarajevo

Emperor Franz Ferdinand was almost killed in Sarajevo by a Serb Nationalist. The gunned jammed, maybe for Franz being protected by Divine Powers... So Franz was saved... What if Franz Ferdinand was killed in Sarajevo? How would Austria Hungary react to a heir being killed by a Serb Nationalist aided by Serb officers in Serbia?

I dunno...same way the Germans did when some assholes bombed the Kaiser’s son’s motorcade? Total war resulting in the Germans getting their asses handed to them?

That's not quite fair. A war in 1914 would be substantially different than one in 1920. The Habsburg Empire would have been able to actually fight as an ally, for one: Franz Joseph was still alive, after all, and knew the limits of what he could realistically do. Once Franz Joseph got on the throne after the old man finally crooked, he threw everything his uncle had carefully preserved in that ultimatium to the Magyars to enfranchise their Slavic populations or face the imposition of marhsal law in hopes of making them flinch... and they diden't. The resulting Civil War left Germany truely diplomatically isolated, especially with Italy offically leaving the Triple Alliance to get a piece of the Danubian Corpse. Have Germany with an ally in the East, especially given Russia wasen't done with her military reforms yet, and they have a solid chance to beating the Czar's armies.

If the war happened in 1914 the US may not have gotten involved as it did IOTL. Wilson was an interesting figure, and could capitalize on the American public not wanting to get involved in a European conflict to beat Hughes in 1916. This probably prevents Cox wining in 1920, and FDR’s presidency in 1922. Due to France and Russia being weaker in 1914, I think the war would be a German victory.

So if FDR doesn't become POTUS in the 20's does he avoid being blamed for the economic collapse ?

No Hoover Presidency in the 30's and 40's ??

What collapse? The Recession of 27'? That was hardly an economic collapse, just a really poorly timed (for the Progressive Dems) slowdown just in time for the elections. Hoover had barely been sworn in for six months before we'd gotten over that little speed bump to the steady economic growth of the 20's. Say what you want about the Progressive movement on the social front, but the regulations the US had kept implimenting since the Teddy era did wonders to smooth out the boom-bust cycles of the previous century into more manageable market corrections.

Still, Hoover probably would have won anyways. Franklin's failed attempt to sell the Equal Rights Amendment in the last two years of his second term (for the sake of legacy, as his autobiography claimed) was really the poision pill for the 28' race. Nobody quite knew what it would mean and read the worst possible outcome into it, and his wife's socially heavy role in trying to push it alongside some... somewhat Red political ideas she was pushing basically stamped the Dems with a scarlet letter that year

So if the Great War started in 1914 or 1915, before the Great Influenza Pandemic rather than afterwards, how much grimmer would the war have been, with everyone's population and industry still firing on all cylinders rather than blunted by the scourge?
Can you imagine the horror of the flu arriving DURING or AFTER the war?
