DBWI: Franklin Delano Roosevelt wins reelection in 1936

We all know that FDR Lost reelection to Alf Landon in 1936, but what do you think would have happened if he got re-elected ? personally I predict Nazi Germany would have lasted much shorter then it did OTL.

How? The Nazi regime cooked its own guts out in 1940 when their economy imploded, giving rise to the new GDR. Hitler basically ignored the cost of rearmament and industrial build-up, and even when Goering took over in 1938 after the Munchen assassination, he couldn't get the overheating economy to cool down even with the Austrian Windfall and the genius of Todt and Schacht.

Honestly, FDR probably would've been a better man than Landon during the peace, but Landon was an admirable Wartime President; he got us to Japan's doorstep by the time he stepped down in '44.

yes but he dies in his third term I think Eisenhower would get into politics and get elected president in 1948

Cordell Hull would had been elected in 1940. FDR suffered a stroke in 1935 which made him die in 1942, so maybe he wasn't ready for a 3rd term. Hull would had been a good wartime president (him being former Secretary and state and all), and it is pretty clear that the Democrats weren't going to nominate a conservative like Garner

How would Wilkie's chances in 44 look? Given Landon making him VP in 40 and his hand in aiding the European nations during the Japan war allowing the British to hold Ceylon, could he do better in a '40 challenge?

Without Landon, the Republican Party would probably be far less progressive than it is IOTL. Landon's refusal to completely abandon the New Deal led the more conservative Republicans to to abandon the GOP and start the National Party.

The sad thing is even with that he slaughtered Garner with contemptible ease.

Now for the POD, I suspect FDR's court packing scheme was never hatched or he did the smart thing and backed down (given how many died over Landon term its definitely a missed opportunity)

What is the POD? Roosevelt doesn't get critically injured in the 1932 assassination attempt? You might have been better off going with that.

One thing is that details of what happened only started coming out recently, so it hasn't gotten into mainstream accounts that the reason Roosevelt did an amazing imitation of Calvin Coolidge during his one term in office is that he had to spend pretty much the entire term re-habbing from his wounds and complications with polio at Warm Springs. There was pretty much no direction in the administration. All this was covered up by the press, who even covered up the fact that he couldn't walk. Of course a big story was made out of Garner's running against him and the convention and winning the nomination when the two agreed that Garner had to be the Democratic nominee in 1936. And the real reason the 22nd Amendment, allowing for the removal of critically ill or injured presidents from office, was passed so quickly afterwards was also kept form the public.

Of course, as it turns out Coolidge himself suffered from depression due to the death of his son during his full term in office and would have been a good candidate for removal if the 22nd Amendment had been in place.

So the obvious POD is no attempt on Roosevelt's life is made, or he makes a more completely recovery. Even having him die in the attempt and letting Garner take over would have worked better. Its not clear how a functioning Franklin Roosevelt would have done during his term in office. The economy was in shambles and Roosevelt had something of a reputation of a dilettante coasting on his family name and wealth. But then he seemed to do OK as Governor of New York. Really, who knows?

OOC: I think we're working with a lot of different ideas because we have FDR die like twice and have him be both ineffective and effective.
