It seems that Orleanist and Spanish candidates unabated rivalry drove De Gaulle nuts to the point he envisaged a Republic with
himself as a king, which would have been more than today's figurehead. The bottom line was -
me, De Gaulle as a figurehead ? no way.
Unfotunately he pissed-off the American so much they threw him under a bus and used that king figurehead to keep him away from France leadership.
