There was a plan by the U.S. gov to reinstall the monarchy as a figurehead after WWII and it worked very well. What if it was not pursued and how would France be today?

Impossible. Republicanism had been a complete fiasco for France in just about every way. I mean they were already talking about reinstating the monarchy in the 1870s but couldn't agree on a candidate.

The OP was incorrect, the idea was pushed by de Gaulle and Churchill over the opposition of the Americans. Henri V worked out so well that American media kept claiming that it had been an American idea during the coverage of his funeral after 1999. And really the way to make the republic work would be with de Gaulle as President, but FDR only agreed to install the Count of Paris instead to prevent that!

I don't think Prince Harry and Prince Henry would have been arrested in Amsterdam for throwing that wild party.
In Harry's defense the police officer threw the first punch.

It seems that Orleanist and Spanish candidates unabated rivalry drove De Gaulle nuts to the point he envisaged a Republic with himself as a king, which would have been more than today's figurehead. The bottom line was - me, De Gaulle as a figurehead ? no way.
Unfotunately he pissed-off the American so much they threw him under a bus and used that king figurehead to keep him away from France leadership. :p That was Roosevelt masterpiece, grundingly followed by Churchill (Great Britain wasn't in a position of strength).
The return of the French monarchy reads like some kind of ASB TL. Best part is Franco underground efforts to try and place his stepson (that was Bourbon related) as king of France to reverse what had happened in 1700 "Ya no hay pirineos" Franco famously joked before Roosevelt calmed him down.

OOC: Somehow I doubt the French people would accept the return of the monarchy after 70+ years of republican government.

OOC: And even more doubtful is that Americans would restore monarchy. USA has always been deeply republican nation (And I don't speak about party).
