DBWI:France didn't conquer Egypt in 1778?

As we know, the French took advantage of the British preoccupation with colonial revolts in North America to invade Egypt in 1778.WI instead of invading Egypt, the French assisted the North American rebels instead?Could France have recovered New France?

I don't know, it still seems ASB to me that, even with French support, the rebels could have won and the Dominion of America would not have been established. Regardless, I guess we can be glad the French went for Egypt! Selim III also took the chance to retake Egypt when the French Revolution broke out, but annexed it to the Ottoman's directly. Could France not going for Egypt mean that the Ottoman's remained decentralized?

OOC: Doubtful the French Revolution would have still broken out the same way given the nobility and public would have been more confident in the government than OTL as they have won a lot of land and would thus be more inclined to pay taxes.France's economic prospects might also be improved with the conquest.

Well, for one, the Bonapartids wouldn't have become Kings of Jerusalem and Lebanon. Maybe the Ottoman Empire would survive to the modern day.

OOC: I never said anything about it happening in the same way.

He only managed to take it because the French had poorly garrisoned it and also poorly governed it building up lots of resentment. In fact the rebels had already liberated a significant portion of Egypt before the Ottomans had invaded. And it's the fact that those rebels also fought against the Ottoman invasion threat caused the so called Ottoman "centralisation". Which was never really centralisation and extremely short lived.

Anyways funny you should mention the revolution. I was talking to my friend about it the other day. We discussed how we thought that if Lafayette hadn't taken charge the revolution probably would have exploded into violence. Luckily when he was asked to preside over the convention he dismissed his qualms o totalitarianism and though of how Washington had done the same thing. And under his leadership the moderate constitutionalists were able to produce the fantastic French constitution which produced a constitutional monarchy in France an reinvigorated France. And thank god he accepted his election as Prime Minister.

Yeah, Lafayette's big strength was always his commitment to legalism. The Bastille Trials sent a very clear message that chopping off someone's head, even in the name of Liberty, was still a crime. Basically Lafayyete established that rule of law, not rule by the mob, or demagogues like Marat, would replace divine right. I still maintain he is one of the greatest politicians of all time.
