DBWI: Fewer Kennedys in political office

Under what scenario would fewer members of the Kennedy family hold political office in the USA?

Currently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is in his second term as President of the United States. His cousin, Caroline won the 2010 special election in New York to succeed him in the US Senate. Bobby's brother, Joe, defeated incumbent Senator Scott Brown for the seat once held by his uncle Ted. Patrick Kennedy is currently the Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island.

Let's not forget Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, sister of the Presient, is currently the Governor of Maryland. Edward Kennedy Jr. was elected to Congress succeeding freshman Senator Chris Murphy. And finally, Bobby's brother David is in his tenth term as a Congressman from Florida (representing most of Fort Lauderdale) and is the current House Majority Leader.

Am I forgetting anybody?

Well, we all know how much assassination of JFK affected the family. Maybe if something happened to wither RFK or Ted? That might be enough to chill members of the Kennedy clan on the family business.

There could be ample chances for this. Back in 68, RFK was almost shot by a Palestinian national, and there were a few attempts on his life when he was President from 77-85. I think a member of the Manson Family even tried at one point!

BTW, you did miss one. Joe Kennedy III just won election to Congress in MA.

It might have been the smallest details that change the score: What if Joe Kennedy Sr. hadn't joined a powerful society in college and become a member of FDR's Cabinet? Joe Sr.'s own political successes--culminating as Truman's Vice President--made him a national figure.

He built a political machine of incredible power. How could Joe Jr, Jack, Robert and Edward not wind up benefiting from it?
