DBWI: Facebook takes off

So we all know about MySpace and how it’s the most popular social media website but does anyone remember Facebook? How can we get Facebook to take off and become really popular?

This is probably ASB. Myspace is so dominate that there is no way Facebook could be really popular. Reddit only thrived because it had enough differences from Myspace for people to use both. This is also why Twitter failed. The only way would be for Myspace to make some really dumb changes.

Quit trying to make it so exclusive.

They kept it tied into .edu or verified business/organization accounts for way too long. Anyone could sign up to Myspace, though they've gotten a bit stricter in the past few years.

Also, as I recall, the Facebook front-end had literally no ability to customize. Everyone's looked the same, and the "Friends" were listed in some random order.

MySpace had a huge head start, and anyone could sign up.

Plus the guy who started Facebook turned out to be a massive creep. So unless he somehow managed to be successful while also not being a, let's be honest here, quite a bad person, it would be a bad thing.

He had an obsession with Asian women and got "Himnowed" for groping a Chinese-American's woman's butt in the workplace. (OOC:#metoo)

When MySpace members were able to create their own groups/events, send private messages and facilitate virtual reality before Facebook could do anything, game over.

I like that I am not bombarded by ads and bots in MySpace.

Why would Facebook explode in popularity when Twitter has already taken over MySpace's role as the dominant social media platform among youth?

Your post contradicts mine.

Not really. MySpace is still the most popular social media platform when you consider all demographics but Twitter has gained rapidly thanks to people in their teens and 20s. Twitter didn’t really flop, just failed to expand beyond their target audience where it is a really successful niche.

Voat's banning porn in 2018 then losin 90% of it's userbase seems to have sealed the doom of upvote/downvote type websites, thankfully. As far as I know there's no would-be successors getting big so the digg-reddit-voat era may be over.

Reddit is still clinging to life, although some subs have started talking about Banning down votes, so you can only upvote. It could revitalize the site, or it could kill it entirely.
