DBWI: Ending speculation, CA Gov. Bruce Lee (D) will run for President in 2008

January 18, 2007 Well this is turning out to be a strange year for the Democrats, but it was kind of expected. Governor Lee already dropped hints of a run at the presidency after winning re-election in late 2006 as governor. Right after the race he continued making public appearances, including a special appearance on the Colbert Report in December.

He brings unique strengths to the table: He's a minority, a mega movie star, and has executive experience as governor of California.

But, honestly, I think he's running to get on the VP ticket, or maybe to become Secretary of State. I mean, a CA Democrat (even a centrist one like Lee) is seen as an outsider from the rest of the US. In addition, the Asian American community is not big enough to carry him like it did in CA. And finally, he's just plain old. This year he's going to turn 68. IF he gets elected, he'll be the 2nd oldest president to be inaugurated (first still being fellow California governor Ronald Reagan!).

Well, I think some are forgetting the time he came out of the washroom at the California State Legislature to a hostage situation by a Mexican drug cartel. They had then entire building hostage except for him because he took out the three guys who burst into his stall. 10:15 AM these criminals were going on about how without legalization this had to happen to show the American citizen what happens when you mess with them (most people now think it's what happens when you let outlaws control the supply of an addiction). Then their action-movie star governor kicked it into high gear and took out enough of them for the SWAT team to actually clean up the rest. By 4:20 PM Bruce Lee was on the Television leading the nation in a prayer for those who had died in the crisis. Though it was a few years ago, it did show he is ready to make some decisions, is brave and put him well over the top of the polls. I wonder if they just put the footage or a reenactment of that into a commercial, would they get more votes?

And what is the POD that creates a plausable basis for this TL?

First, he has to not die in 1973. Second, he has to be as popular as Arnie was to run for governor in the 2003 recall election and win. He might possibly be a goodwill ambassador to China/HK in the 90s or perhaps a mayor of San Fran (since that's his hometown) before that.

All of which is reasonable, IMHO.

Vote Lee!

Hmm... the more I think about it the more I hope it would be Lee versus Norris. Come on, we have waited since Enter the Dragon 3!!!!

Governor Lee has certainly been a popular leader. His universal health care plan (e.g. "Healthy California") in 2006, has been seen cited by DNC Chairman Howard Dean as a "model of modern compassion". Second, his support of Mayor Gavin Newsom's same-sex marriage in 2005 has made California the sixth state in the Union to allow such marriages.

He is certainly a strong national leader as well. During the Clinton administration, his defense of Wen Ho Lee in 1998 against accusations of Chinese espionage, served to affirm his role as a leader in the Asian-American community. He was also essential in 1996 in getting the Filipino-American Veterans Equity Act passed. 54 years is too long for veterans to receive wartime benefits.

I certainly hope that the Republicans don't plan to drag Governor Lee's name through the mud over his alleged extra-marrital affairs. The last thing anyone wants is the nude pictures of alleged mistress Kelly Hu from 2003 plastered over the Internet again...
