DBWI: Elephants not reintroduced to the Americas?

I wonder how maritime trade and naval technology would be effected, given how many of the major advances in the late middle ages arose to enable the importing of elephants from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe, and later transporting them across the Atlantic.

I also wonder what the impact on elephant breeding would be. I assume that the only reasonable PoD to prevent them being reintroduced in America would be if they were somehow prevented from being reintroduced in Europe, in which case that's 2000+ years of domestication and breeding across a huge chunk of human civilisation butterflied away. That means no aforementioned dwarf elephants, no Pyrenees Chargers, no Syrian Mastodons, none of the woolly pseudo-mammoths bred to survive in colder climates, and that's not even touching on the vanity breeding projects of the Englesk aristocracy from the 17th Century onwards.

There are just so many butterflies that this scenario, and so much that we take for granted would have to be re-examined. Think of how many battles and wars would have gone differently. Without their legendary elephantry maybe the Spanish wouldn't have succeeded in pulling off the reconquista? If the Turkish army hadn't been delayed to ensure that their elephant divisions arrived they might have been able to send the much needed reinforcements which could have turned the Siege of Vienna in their favour? If the Anglo-Saxon Kings hadn't placed such a high emphasis on elephants then maybe William the Bastard might not have bankrupted himself trying to out elephant them, whilst Harald Hardrada might not have had the advantage of his experience in anti-elephant tactics he picked up during his stint in the Varangian Guard?

Also vis My Little Pony/Donkey, I read somewhere that Hasbro are planning to release an equine themed toy line marketed to little boys. Good luck trying to compete with Thunder Stallions:p.

Hannibal´s North African elephants were tiny. About 2,5 m tall. Great horses basically. Real African Elephants couldn´t be tamed possibly.

Not to mention How terrifying Spanish Elephants where to the Aztecs and Incas. Speaking of which, how would the ecosystems of south and central america be different without feral elephant populations? I remember reading somewhere that the "elephant highways" of tree free paths through the amazon is hugely influential on the local ecosystem, right up there with effect of beavers in New Zealand.
