DBWI Eisenhower lives

Eisenhower's last act as president was to send the airborn to little rock to end segergation in the schools. One week later the president, vice president and their wives were driving through DC, three members of the KKK attacked their car with a bomb, and then riddled the car with gunfire.

President Eisenhower was killed instantly, but then Vice President Nixon could only watch helplessly as his wife Pat slowly bled out in his arms. The three assasins were caught and their leader Sam Owens gave a racist tirade during the very public trial.

This event was credited by many for making the 1950s what it was, forging President Nixion into the man he became, and giving the civil rights movement a Martred president.

But what if the attack had failed, what would have happened to america, how would the world be changed?

Maybe Nixon would have run later? Like In 1960

I could see that, but his wifes death was the thing that made Nixon Nixon, like bruce waynes parents dying leads to batman.

I don't know if he would have the drive to be president with out that.

Given all he accomplished for our country we are lucky he was President but sad he had to suffer the way he did to become a great leader

I wonder what would have happened in a world without the Civil Rights movement of the 50s ?

Maybe we wouldn't have the saying "As rare as an African American Democrat"

If Ike and Pat had survived, the nation would still have been appalled by the attempt and the segregationists still would have been discredited.

Also, don't forget that the major victories of the civil rights era were already in place. Brown v Board of Education was three years earlier, the Montgomery bus boycott two years earlier, and the Civil Rights Act a few weeks earlier.

It would have made a greater difference if the attack had never been attempted at all. In that case, enforcement of the Civil Rights Act isn't as high a priority and the segregationists keep dragging their feet. We might have needed additional legislation.

This might be moving into ASB territory, but in such a scenario we might see African-American votes going mainly to the Democrats. The 1958 recession caused a lot of Northern Republicans to be replaced by Northern Democrats. Northern Democrats weren't invested in segregation (in fact, Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey was a vocal proponent of civil rights). If additional civil rights legislation had been needed to achieve integration, the Democrats would have enacted it and the Republicans would have had an incentive to court the Dixiecrats.

"Just because its personal it doesn't mean it isn't right." -Richard Nixon.

That man courting Dixy crats? Nixon hated their guts with an undying passion. Were talking about the man who when he saw Kings march get hoses and dogs put on him, got on a plane and then Marched right next to him, and brought armed marines who volunteered to march with him. Yeah I simply do not see it happening. Nixon could be ruthless at times but he dispised the dixycrats too much to ever work with them.

Anyone remember Senator Goldwater from Arizona? Came close to gaining the Republican nomination in 1964. Among his efforts was a attempt to bring DixyCrats over to his bid for the nomination. It ultimately fell short, but did further draw them from the Democratic party and created the base for Gov Wallaces third party run in 1968.

Yeah I do, his little temper tantrum after he lost the Primaries got us stuck with the scandal ridden Wallace adminstration and got our boys killed in that god damned war of his.
