DBWI: Eisenhower doesn’t defect to the Soviet Union in WWIII

The OTL US called Eisenhower of retirement so he could lead the military to victory in 1949, as he led the Allies to victory in WWII.

However, in his conversations he had with captured Communist saboteurs in the West, instead of discovering a weakness in the Soviet Union he was instead convinced that Communism was needed to advance humanity to its next stage and defected, sabotaging the defense of Western Europe and China, destroying two American fleets, and giving away almost all tech advantages. This left America with no method of fighting effectively besides NBC weapons that killed such a horrific chunk of the world population.

What if this didn’t happen? What if Eisenhower had remained loyal? Given the industrial advantage enjoyed by the West, could they have defeated Communism?

OOC: This may be the most original idea in a while. Props to you.

In Character:
I think that the communists would’ve lost in a brutal battle. This was only 4 years after the war. The economies of Europe had not fully recovered. I imagine a limited invasion of Poland and Hungary would’ve forced a surrender and the Soviets would be attacked in the European front by Europe and on the pacific by Japan and U.S. and Canada. Plus Turkey and Greece would be in strategic locations. They would’ve won without NBC weapons if it weren’t for Eisenhower’s treason.

What kind of death total would you expect?

Without the second biochemical phase of the war, the scorched lands of what was once Eurasia-Africa would still be relevant geopolitically instead of being lethal to the point where nobody can survive more than four minutes even in relatively untouched areas like madagascar or Java.

"The Manchurian Candidate" probably wouldn't be a film about a brainwashed general executing an everyday soldier.

So let me see if I get this right.
A general comes out of retirement and defects. Not very likely but ok.
Said General somehow gives away the defenses of not just the US but several other countries as well. Ok this is doubtful unless he didn’t just defect but was acting as a double agent. And even that level of incompetence needed to screw up multiple counties defense is going to result in his fellow officers having issues. They may not think he is a spy but they WILL think the old man has lost it and have him removed.
As for getting a couple fleets destroyed this is next to impossible. The Navy is NOT going to give a retired General that came back from retirement and who has NEVER been involved in navel anything that kind of say in what they do. And doing it twice is ASB.
As for giving away our technology. Well first he has to have access to it. And last time I checked just because he is a General does not mean he has the design drawings for our newest Bomb or aircraft on his desk. And he Sure doesn’t have access to what our allies are working on.
Yes knowing the US is building a nuclear powered sub is useful but that does not help YOU build one.

So while if he acted as an agent he could screw up a battle or two. And acting as a spy he could hand over basic plans and such but he would not be around long enough to cause that much damage before he is declared “mentally incompetent “ and removed.
As a spy he has access to tactics and strategy but as for technology a low ranking draftsman would be able to do more damage as he can get his hands on the drawings.

The other issue with this is that while Ike may decide the world is better off under communism I have HUGE issues with the idea that Ike would sacrifice that many of “his boys”

Plus how long would he have lived in the Soviet Union? He had severe heart problems that the United States standards of medicine could barely keep him alive I doubt seriously if the USSR had standards even close to the US's. I would think he would be lucky to be alive for 4 or five years in the Soviet Union.

Are you denying WWIII happened or that Eisenhower defected?

I’ve got to admit I’ve heard a lot, but this is new even to me.

I just finished reading a book "The President and the General" about the Truman MacArthur confrontation. What stroke me was the confidential testimony of Omar Bradley, Joe Collins and Hoyt Vandenburg. In a nutshell we had 25% of our total airpower committed in Korea and most divisions were substantially understrength. The point being that the US was not in a position to go to war in 1951 against the Soviets. Would 1949 been any different?
