DBWI: earlier "Watchmen"

As we know, Terrorism and megacorporations were the themes in the universally acclaimed Watchmen series (1996), with an excellent film adaptation in 2006.

What if they had released it say, 1986. What would its main themes be?

Considering how leftist Alan Moore is it would probably be about fears of a rise of a fascist Reagan regime. But that's what Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Rises was on, so a Watchmen set in the 1980s might have tanked for being unoriginal.

But i have to say the idea of the Croatian, Dr. Manhattan, having to deal with the theme of Genocide in the Balkans, was very complicated, but Moore pulled it off perfectly.

He was a pure badass. Not only did he win the Vietnam war single handedly, he also managed to personally catch Karadzic and punch the lights out of him several decades later.

I was also amazed at the restraint he showed to the Villain who killed his half brother.
