DBWI: Dwight D. Eisenhower hadn't turned down Republican nomination in 1952?

As most are well aware of, there had been a concentrated and extensive effort on the part of some in the Republican Party to try and recruit General Dwight D. Eisenhower to run as their nominee in 1952 against the Democrats over the expected nominee, Robert Taft - Eisenhower however turned them down once he learned that Truman was not running; and Adlai Stevenson would go on to defeat Robert Taft in the General Election by a respectable margin that November (as well as win a second term in 1956).

What would have happened had Eisenhower said yes and ran, would he have got the nomination over Taft, would he have beaten Stevenson; how would a Eisenhower Presidency and the future play out?

I think no matter what it is a safe assumption to say that he would get the nomination, which would almost certainly butterfly Earl Warren getting elected in 1956. I certainly think Eisenhower would've beaten Stevenson by a wide margin, but I don't know who he'd face in 1956.

It's probably safe to say that Eisenhower would have beaten Stevenson, but that does leave a question on who he'd face in 1956, seeing as the 50's were a time where the Democrats had a surprising lack of national leaders; only carried on by the strength of Stevenson and his incumbency.

The Party might have drafted Earl Warren's 1960 Opponent four years early. Eisenhower vs. LBJ pits two Texans against each other.

I think only Lyndon Johnson had the kind of clout to go up against Eisenhower in 56, but he'd probably wait it out till 60 when a less popular figure was up. Hubert Humphrey seems like a good candidate from the Truman wing of the party to run in 56 as an alternative.

Honestly, I would have to say that LBJ was probably too much of an ambitious and power hungry kind of man to think about going up against someone such as Eisenhower if he could wait four more years and run against a weaker Republican candidate if possible.

Such is the reason he ran in 1968 when the Republicans had no really strong candidates to succeed the two-term Warren presidency.

Humphrey is a good possibility; or maybe even Stevenson's OTL VP Estes Kefauver.

I believe you mean 64, but I suppose you're right... OOC: Also, I had previously stated LBJ ran against Warren in 1960, but I suppose he made a comeback?

I don't think Stevenson could've gotten the Party Bosses on his side without having first been Vice President.

OOC: Yes he did

IC: Ah yes, right; I almost forgot that LBJ made a comeback in 64 and not 68

As for Kefauver, you're probably right; but Kefauver being Vice President didn't stop LBJ from getting the nomination in 1960 anyway; so maybe it'd have to be Humphrey or maybe even Kennedy.

Well, Kefauver seemed very half-hearted about wanting the nomination. I mean, his health was already in such decline by 1960...

As for this ATL we're discussing, I think Kennedy's father would've talked him out of facing Eisenhower in 1956.

Also, who would Nixon pick as his VP? Taft? Bricker? If it is Taft, who does he pick in 1956?

OOC:

Harry Truman (D) 1945-1953
Adlai Stevenson (D) 1953-1957
Earl Warren (R) 1957-1965
Lyndon Johnson (D) 1965-1973

IC:

Possibly, the fact the Kefauver died only a few months after Warren was inagurated may indicate he had only been running to appease Adlai and never had any serious intentions of trying to getting the nom; allowing LBJ to swoop in and seize it.

Hmm... maybe Truman's VP Barkley then? or was he too tainted by association to Harry?

OOC: I established in the first post that Stevenson won two terms; so that should be Stevenson to 1961 and Earl Warren 1961-1965.
