DBWI - Dutch or English Aotiaoa?

Hello! I am a native of Aotiaoa, and I've recently learned that both the Dutch (Abel Tasman) and English (James Cook) visited Aotiaoa, but turned back due to native attack. So, I'm wondering, what if they persisted? What if they attempted to colonize or even settle the region? What if the diseases that killed off the Omrayé came earlier, after Dutch contact, and allowed to English and/or returning Dutch to settle the region?

(OOC: Aotiaoa is basically French New Zealand, with some major Portuguese minorities, and minor British, Maori, and Asian minorities. Omrayé, meanwhile, is the French term for the Maori.)

Maybe the Shun Dynasty not allying with the French could be a good POD for this?

That is true, then the French would have next to zero access or influence in the Pacific. Though who would get there first? The Dutch or the English? And provided they get there sooner than the French in OTL, this could lead to an interesting scenario: The Omrayé do not have such high mortality rates due to European disease.

I don’t know, what do you guys think?

Brabant maybe? Nieuw Brabant? Or maybe just a broad Nieuw Holland.

Considering English naming customs, I feel an English Aotiaoa would be called something the natives referred to Aotiaoa as. Or maybe it’s named after an English king, or James Cook even.

The English could call the Charlottina or something, after the Queen at the time that Cook discovered them.

Brabant was not a province, so I doubt it would be called Brabant. Holland might make more sense, but there already was a New Holland, actualy even two. Probably another province, most likely one of a more maritime provinces (so utrecht, overijssel and Gerlderland are out). So what about New Frisia/Nieuw Friesland.

What about Nieuw Zeeland? The Brits could anglicise it to New Zealand or something. Or if the Brits get there first, we could call it... maybe Augusta?

Definitely! Charlottesland rolls off the tongue though.

Or maybe Cook could go the narcissistic path and name it after himself. Cooksland? Cooksia?

Mmm...Cooksia...

The problem is that Frisia was inhabited by the Frisian people, who were not Dutch. It could work, but I doubt it would be called that. Maybe New Utrecht? Yes, it doesn't have much coastline, but, much like Aotiaoa, it was split into two by a body of water. For us, it's Le Détroit, for them it's the Rhine.

Zéland was Dutch? Huh. That could work! It would be the cause of some awkwardness after, or if, the French barge in.

Augusta sounds nice, same for New Zealand.

I think a big change may be that a British focus on Aotiaoa may distract them from the Sandwich Islands and prevent it from becoming a protectorate-so no "Grand Duchy of Kamehameha" established under British protection in 1901 as per OTL. The islands might be divided, with different European powers partitioning Hawaii, Oahu, Maui etc. between them-we might see a English, French, and even Russian colonies established.

I suppose we might see the islands colonized by a single power but that seems unlikely.

Zeeland could work I guess. i just like Friesland better. The British most likely would anglicise it to sealand though. That would be a direct translation.

The Frisian are Dutch. They are the inhabitants of the Dutch province Friesland. You should not confuse them with the Germanic tribe the Frisians.

I think you are confusing things. Zeeland is a province of the Netherlands. At the Meuse and Schelde estuary. Capital is Middleburg.

Not to be confused by micronation in the north sea.

OOC: They're changing it so that the French control Zeeland, hence the different spelling.

OOC i know and I didn´t care for it. Since noone actualy said that Zeeland was French, I could simply claim that it was a Dutch province. Especialy since it was effectively said to be Dutch by AlternateHistory191.

I didn't realize that, but that's true, that might happen!

I heard that around the mid-1800s, there was a Russian craze for Polynesian products, which subsided massively when Russia took note of increasing Franco-English domination of the market and closed off trade to not become subservient to their enemies in any way. Had the Sandwich Islands been open, Russia very well may have hopped from Alyaska (OOC: Alaska.) or Zonomia (OOC: Northwestern California, derives from "Sonoma," which is actually Native American in origin.) to the Islands, to take hold of them and grow their own Polynesian crops. Union of the Elizabeta Islands anyone?

New Sealand or just Sealand would be an interesting name. Though, would the English go as far as to name some islands "Sealand?" :)

(OOC: ITTL and OTL the Frisians are a separate ethnic group.

Let's let AlternateHistory191 decide this, since he brought it up. @AlternateHistory191, do you think Zeeland should be Dutch, or formerly Dutch and now French?

Also, Sealand does not exist ITTL for certain, heh.)
