DBWI: Drake hadn't captured Darien?

After the Battle of San Juan, where the English were defeated, Drake sailed to Darien, now Caledonia, part of British Columbia, and captured it for the English crown. What if he hadn't? Do you think disease could've taken him? What would Central and South America be like without being split by an English speaking country?

If England hadn't captured Darien, the Spanish would probably have. And Drake did suffer some illness but managed to recuperate afterwards; had things taken a turn for the worst.....who knows? Maybe there wouldn't have been a British Columbia at all; after all, his little Darien Colony was the primary center for the country, originally, before it expanded southeastwards towards what was Bogota, and into northward to Nicaragua, and eventually, even southwards towards Peru by the late 18th century(though Peru and Quito were independent again by 1880).

All in all, it had an enormous effect, TBH: Britain trying to hold down Peru was one of the main reasons why Virginia and most of the other Anglo (North) American mainland colonies were able to break away in the 1780s. And Irish fried potatoes, one of the world's most beloved culinary creations, might have been invented somewhere else.....maybe in Belgium, perhaps? And that's just two things I can think of.

OOC: Is this alright, btw?
