Its been seventeen years since the Walt Disney Company announced they have bought the Japanese film company Daiei Film for $990 million, to some outrage in Japan from nationalists but pretty much next to no fanfare in America. It wouldn't be until fourteen years later with their reboot of Gamera did the general audience even become aware of it. What do you think things would be like had Disney not bought out the company?

I think if Disney didn't buy Daiei, the socioeconomic relationships between Japan and the US would be much different. Many of the right-leaning and nationalistic groups decried Disney buying Daiei as foreign businesses stealing away their media, and got to place tariffs and the like to make foreign and domestic businesses more difficult and avoid anyone buying out one another.

Umm, Disney might not show so much goddamn anime during the day, for one. But hey, at least my kids are learning Japanese from Mickey and Minnie.
Not that you mention it, I imagine anime wouldn't be introduced to mainstream America as early. Who knows what kind of butterflies that would have?
