Back in 1977, up-and-coming producer/director George Lucas was shopping around a science fiction adventure script at the same time King Features Syndicate was looking for a producer/director for a Flash Gordon movie. One of the director seekers got Lucas onboard with it, and we all know the result. But according to a book on film history I read not too long ago, Dino de Laurentiis and Lucas were both in contention for the job. What might have Gordon going to de Laurentiis have meant for the film, Lucas' career, and visual SF in general?
