In December of 1943, FDR had a stroke and passed away. His VP, Henry Wallace, was more hesitant than FDR concerning WW2 action, and was widely seen as even more progressive. Wallace picked FDR’s Secretary of State Hull as his VP to improve his credibility among the more conservative and hawkish wing of the party, but the gesture failed. He faced a primary challenge from Carter Glass of Virginia, which split the Democratic Party in 2 before the election of 1944. Dewey was the favorite going in, and he won big, only losing 8 states, 6 of which were in the South and which Glass won. How different would the world look if FDR lived through the next election and been able to win?
