DBWI: Dennis Miller does not play Jar Jar Binks

For most of the 1990's, Dennis Miller was one of the hottest comedians on cable, blessed with his very own talk show on HBO.

Suddenly, Dennis Miller wanted more. He wanted to conquer Hollywood. By the late fall of 1996, he finally got his first opportunity. He would play the role of Jar Jar Binks, a character intended to be the comic relief in the long awaited prequel to the Star Wars trilogy.

What was supposed to be a bright future for the beloved film property ended with George Lucas retiring in disgrace and his Lucasfilm empire sold to DreamWorks SKG only four months after The Phantom Menace's release. Critics condemned Miller's rant style of humor as being completely unfitting and inappropriate for a space opera film.

Afterwards, DreamWorks hired screenwriters to write the Rant-counteur out of Episodes II and III altogether.

But now, Star Wars fans are left to ponder what the franchise would look like had Dennis Miller stayed out of it in the first place.

I'm not much of a star wars guy, but this would be bad. Buying out Lucasfilms gave DreamWorks the means to build their own empire and eventually buy out Warner, making them a real contender with the house of mouse.
No Miller Binks, no DW Star Wars, no Disney Rival

True... We might never have gotten that sequel to Small Soldiers in that case. Which was a genuinely good film...

I'm actually going to disagree with the majority and say that Dennis did a fine job as Jar Jar binks and that the first prequel was actually pretty good.

The problem was that the gungan empire section went on too long, and that the final battle was badly made, the rest of it was actually pretty good. If they had focused less on the gunans and more on the rest of the story the movie would have a much better reputation.

Dennis Miller destroyed the character of Jar Jar. I'm supremely confident that if Lucas had hired another actor for the role, then J.J. (as us Bink-heads like to call him) would have entered the Star Wars cannon as one of the great comic relief characters along with C3PO and Drabba the Hut.

Well, it would've prevented the now-memetic 'I'll be damned if I let Jar-Jar's opinions have any influence on me' response some Congressman (I forget which one) had to Miller tweeting criticism of him.

@West

Any clue what Dennis has been up to since Star Wars?

He's done a really good job playing sinestro on the new green lantern cartoon, and the tie in video games the man is just excellent at that kind of swarmy arrogance that just makes for the perfect villan he's also the voice of plankton on sponge bob square pants.
