DBWI: David Duke loses the 1991 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election

As I'm sure we all know, David Duke won that election in the run-off by a narrow margin of 50.2% to 49.8% against the Democrat Edwin Edwards. There were widespread reports of voter intimidation on election day, and many question the legitimacy of the result.

How different would things in the state of Louisiana have been if Duke had been defeated?

Well, the Republicans would be in a stronger position nationally in the following years, maybe Bush does better in the General* -- at minimum, that would mean no President Perot...

*then again, as long as Pat Buchanan was running...

David Duke completely RUINED Louisiana. By the end of his term, the state was tens of millions of dollars in debt and had high unemployment whereas everyone else was doing fine under Clinton's administration. It wasn't just LA, though. In Texas where I once lived, we somehow ended up electing Ron Paul to the top office in '94. Guy only received about 35% of the popular vote, but it was a three way race: Bush was embroiled in a scandal, and Ann Richards had really pissed off the conservatives. Add that to a record-low voter turnout, and we had a recipe for disaster.
@MaskedPickle: Governor Baldwin* tried this here in Texas in 2003. He was impeached as well, rather swiftly too.

OOC: *Chuck Baldwin. Google this fuckhead. Seriously.

Yeah, though I'd say trying to push secession after Clinton's election in 96, then again as Health Care Reform approached. That was just dumb, regardless. (I still find it baffling that the nut had managed re-election by that point -- the impeachment was past due when it happened, IMO.)

OOC: See post 2 ;)
