What if the failed 1973 coup of Mohammed Daoud Khan against his first cousin, Afghan King Mohammed Zahir Shah, succeeded? How would Khan’s coup effect Afghanistan and its path of modernisation?

The People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan perhaps? The Soviets will probably try to overthrow him and replace him with a puppet regime.
And America just sits by twiddling it's thumbs while that happens? The Soviets will probably try to get him in their pocket. If he refuses, they'll overthrow him and replace him with a puppet regime.
Possibly, I'd assume transition to a constitutional monarchy as a perquisite.Do you think the Americans would support a restoration of King Mohammad Zahir Shah?
It also means Pakistan would be eager to get rid of him.Daoud’s Pashtun nationalism would also probably screw him over.
Yep. And he really was progressive which would anger the tribes. King Zahir Shah was forward-thinking and progressive but went about it gradually. Daoud would probably try to drag Afghanistan into the modern era kicking and screaming. In 1970s Afghanistan that is a bad idea.It also means Pakistan would be eager to get rid of him.
Yep. There was actually a TL on this site about a year ago revolving around an Afghanistan where Daoud’s coup was a success. It was in 3 parts and I can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. But anyway here are the 3 parts:Well, Afghanistan would probably be far more unstable than OTL.
That one is totally ASB.Yep. There was actually a TL on this site about a year ago revolving around an Afghanistan where Daoud’s coup was a success. It was in 3 parts and I can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. But anyway here are the 3 parts:
Part 1: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Afghanistan
Part 2: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet–Afghan_War
Part 3: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghan_Civil_War_(1989–92)
The ending was a real downer.![]()
It's not ASB. The US supported worse crazies just to spite the Soviets or undermine unfriendly regimes. That one is totally ASB.
The US government is way too sophisticated to back a bunch of religious extremists and hope for the best.
Yes, they backed Democratic Kampuchea after they got invaded by Vietnam for starters. It's not ASB. The US supported worse crazies just to spite the Soviets or undermine unfriendly regimes.

Probably would’ve in the Afghan TL if it went any further after the Taliban takeover.No. USA would support anyone who oppose Soviets. Speciality Reagan thought strongly that enemy of enemy is friend. No matter what he is thinking. Of course this might kickback badly for United States later.
