The recent gathering of historians and military experts at UN Headquarters in Melbourne concluded that the so-called "Cuban Missile War" of 1962 was basically inevitable, and there was no way it could have been avoided. Unfortunately, most of what we know comes from the US side of things - there being so little left of what was once the Soviet Union, or Central Europe for that matter - and even then, much of the US record is understandably incomplete.

So my question to the assembled group is: is there any plausible path that either side could have pursued to avoid the Cuban crisis going "hot"?
