DBWI: Could Cortez have conquered Mexico?

Anahuac is of course famed for being the only American country never being colonized by Europeans, not for lack of trying though.

Now I just found out about this guy named Hernan Cortez, apparently he went against his orders and tried to invade the Aztec empire of Anahuac. He obviously failed miserably, having no where near the numbers of the Aztecs and no supplies, as well as the skill of the Aztec warriors.

However the Aztec Empire was indeed in dire straits in the time of his invasion, european diseases was ravaging the country and there were talks of rebellion all over. Had Moctezuma not been the capable ruler he was, the Empire may well have fallen apart from rebellion, maybe Cortez would have succeeded then?

How do you think this would have affected Anahuac, would it have become a spanish colony or would it have been to difficult for the spaniards to hold onto?

No,how on Earth could he? The man had like 500 guys and a few old nags and, being expicently disavowed by the Governor of Cuba, wasn't going to be getting any more. I don't care what kind of technological advantage you have, worst case scenario they would get bottled up in a defensive position and starved/sickened out or literally engulfed by the enemy. Even if the Aztecs tributaries did dissolve into Civil War... how does he gain control and restore order over the situation when he has zero political experience, no resource base, and is a person non grata from the represenatives of the Crown in the region. Sometimes, the winds are too strong and the butterflies too tiny to avoid getting swept away

NICE.

No. It is quite unlikely that he could do this considering the conditions. However, this does not mean that Anahuac's independence was guaranteed. A larger Spanish force could be sent later, after the Spaniards hear of a large and wealthy empire in the area from some of Cortez's soldiers who manage to escape complete decimation at the hands of the mighty Aztecs. It would be interesting to see how the colonization of the rest of the Americas is affected by this change (hint hint).
