DBWI: Clinton not assassinated?

As we all know, President Bill Clinton was assassinated during his visit to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Manila in 1996, just after his reelection. His car drove over a bridge where a bomb had been planted, and Clinton was killed instantly. Not long later, the Clinton assassination was revealed to have been mastermind by Osama bin Laden. He was succeed by Al Gore, who beats Elizabeth Dole in 2000 on his own right, becoming the longest-serving president since FDR. So my question is, what if Clinton was not assassinated in 1996? Would he still start the war on terrorism?

I think one way or another, we WOULD have been forced to deal with Osama Big Laden, and the ALQaida network.

Something like a threat of their caliber is not something you can just pretend does not exist.

If President Clinton had not been a martyr to the cause of Liberty, the alternative may have been even more devastating.

The Gore-Gingerich partnership proved important for both nessasary reform and a number of bipartisan projects - without two space nuts at the helm of Congress and the White House for more than a decade, would we have returned to the moon, or had the recent Mars mission? Hell, with Clinton still at the helm, would we have even passed welfare reform or the balanced budget admendment?

The balance budget amendment was a sham and most folk know it. it was just a stunt for the republican base as it never really adresses the need to keep INCOME up to match spending.

Had Bill Clinton survived to serve a second term, Senator Carol Mosely Braun (D-IL) would be running for reelection in 1998 and Hillary would be looking for another state to run for political office in.

Luckily for Hillary, Mosely Braun saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to take one for the team.

What concernes me about the possibility here is that without the martyrdom of Clinon in 96, would we have the modern status quo of bipartisan co operation today?

I really do not mean it to sound this way, but in a sick bizarre way of looking at it, the murder of An American President by a hostile foreign national in the living memories of the majority of sitting politicians did more to unite the two parties in common cause than even oh, say another "Pearl Harbor" might have done.

More than a decade of balanced budgets would indicate otherwise.

Oh sure they balanced them, but look what happened when the democrats needed to balance the budget 3 years ago, taxes jumped like crazy. Now we're in a deeper hole than before. The amendment became something that Republicans ended up despising. And Gingrich's career is finished now.

That tax hike is likely the reason the GOP took back congress back in 2010, and will get a supermajority this year. People don't like having the taxes hiked so the Dems could pay for Porkzilla.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of the Gore Administration, in my opinion. We may soon see the Lunar colonies of Armstrong and Clinton admitted as states...

No doubt, though the Internet is a close second. I think Armstrong and Clinton may have a ways to go before statehood - collectively, they just broke the 10,000 citizen mark after all!

I take it then that no believes the stories that he liked to play with the interns

What do you mean "playing with the interns"? That was just a rumor started by Newt Gingrich and the Republicans because they couldn't kill Clinton's popularity.

(Remember, we are role playing ;))

I know, but these things can take on a life of their own. There was that rumor a few years back that Tony Blair made a pass at Hillary on his first visit to America after becoming Prime Minister, nonsense of course but its starting to creep into biographies as fact. Even though every one who supposadly witnessed it rubbishes the claims. Hell there's even a news video that proves its not true and they still go on about it.

I don't know what Tony would see in Hillary anyway.

:p

They could be admitted as one collective state, perhaps Lunaria?

That seems likely in another decade or so. The way the H3 industry is booming, they may brake the 60,000 citizen mark by 2030, in time for a state of Luna. By that point, we may go to Mars for colonies :D

I could see it, Kennedy did too, and Clinton was notorious as a Womanizer as the governor of Arkansaw.

Well, if Hillary wasn't fucking things up so much, he might've been able to pull a Nixon. But this year was too soon for him after '08. Get ready for President Jeb Bush.

We could do worse than Jeb. Certainly no wose than Hillary.

Would unemployment be 18% without the balanced budget amendment??

It would be without President Hillary Clinton I bet. What was she thinking doubling the tax rate in the middle of a ressession?

There's another question? Without her husband dying, would Hillary have entered politics, at least successfully? She was pretty damned unpopular prior to the death of Bill, and even then, just barely won her Senate seat on the sympathy vote.
