DBWI: Chris Farley dies in the 90s

Legendary actor and comedian Chris Farley is known for his evolving range as an actor as well as being the face of recovered addicts. Though nearly every role of his is comic (and hilarious,) he did one Oscar-winning performance in Metamorphosis, a “fictional” account of a comic who nearly dies from obesity, alcohol and cocaine dependence. However, like Farley, his character enters rehab and finds God, reinvents himself, and becomes a clean comedian (well, cleaner; he’s quite fond of mild curse words and sexually implicit situations.)

In 1997, Farley had a close call with an overdose of cocaine and morphine; by most accounts, he barely survived. After that, he turned his life around, lost a bunch of weight, quit drinking and doing drugs, and started going to church.

How would the entertainment industry be different if Farley died?

Without Chris Farley as producer Darkfall the oscar-winning best picture of 2016 proably neverwhat have been made.
For those who have been living under a rock Darkfall is the story of Hitler's rise to power. Jim Kerry as Hitler, Nicolas Cage has Joseph Goebbels, John Goodman as Ernst Röhn and Brad Pitt as Himmler with Chris Farley as Hermann Goering.
Chris Farley had a huge laugh on himself playing Hermann Goering, after the weight loss and being sober he had to put on a fat suit and shoot scenes doing drugs.
But what more can be said about Jim Carrey playing Adolf Hitler, he nailed it perfectly he was utterly terrifying.

The Marvel Combined Universe probably takes a much darker tone. I mean, can you imagine going with Ed Norton for Hulk instead of Farley, as they were planning in 2007? Or an "Iron Man 2" without Farley showing up to save good ol' Sam Rockwell/Iron Man?

If Farley had died there's a good chance The Gelfin never gets made. His portrayal of Fatty Arbuckle in that Biopic was really transitional in being considered for more serious roles. As I understand it he was the driving force behind the picture and the biggest proponent of it being made. Really who else could have played that part after his own dark times he really understood it in a way few could.

Forget Shrek and Captain Underpants for a minute.

What about mention the adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces? What a loss that would have been.

Chris Farley was that movie’s only saving grace. The rest of it was horseshit - I rewatch it now and fast-forward through any scenes he’s not in. The movie is infinitely better that way and it still makes sense.

Also, I read that Dreamworks actually called Mike Myers to replace Farley as Shrek until they realized Farley wasn’t dead. Frankly, I can’t picture Myers as Shrek - Farley’s delivery is spot-on, funny but displaying a deep pain.

Chris Rock and Janeane Garofalo were also good, though yeah, the film is a mess.

Not to mention how Farley convinced Eddie Murphy (while working together on Shrek) to host SNL, not only did Murphy become a member of the five-timers club, but he was also one of the most popular hosts the show ever had, with some of the sketches he was in rivaling his 80s work.
