DBWI Chinese conquest of Formosa

In 1661 after 37 years of dutch rule the chinese launched a fleet to conqure the dutch colony of Formosa, due to a freak storm much of the chinese fleet was destroyed, the dutch defenders were able to fight off and defeat the Ming Fleet, the utter destruction of the fleet is often credited with being one of the main things that led to the Qings victory in their war of conquest against china.

The Dutch continued to hold onto the Island until they lost it to the british empire in the 3rd anglo dutch war of 1672, It remained a part of the british empire until it was granted home rule in the 1950s, but what if the chinese had managed to conquer the Island. How would that have changed the world?

Would the Ming be able to hold onto power? Would the british empire be able to function with out the jewel of the orient safe garding the eastern part of their empire? What would Formosa look like with out over 200 years of british rule?

OOC: By the time of Koxinga's conquest of Taiwan, the Ming was royally screwed. Koxinga had even failed in his attempt to recapture Nanjing, and thus gained the motivation to conquer Taiwan.

IC: I doubt that the Ming could climb out from the mess it had got itself into. But after an eventual Qing conquest of Taiwan...perhaps a more maritime Empire? A China holding Taiwan could perhaps allow the Qing to turn the island into a trading hub just as the British did. China might even gain a small colonial Empire and become a significant maritime power--perhaps usurping Dutch power in the East Indies if given sufficient encouragement, as opposed to the land-based Empire that the Qing still is nowadays.

A chinese Formosa , or Taiwan rather, would have a chinese majority instead of european and austronesian majority.

There were already Chinese blood among the Sirayas of the southwest when the Dutch arrived there; in the north, a significant Ryukyuan influence was felt while in the east, there were reports of Japanese patrilineal descent among the tribes living there.

Can we honestly say that the Qing are still in charge of china? They got kicked out of most of it during the revolution and the only reason they still exist is because they ran back to Manchuria.

Over time, the culture would probably be replaced with something more recognizably Chinese...and then we'd miss out on some excellent Formosan hertenbak...slathered over in saosami sauce  (a must-have if anyone plans to visit Formosa anytime soon)

The Dutch won't be able to pull off their conquest the Northern 1/3 of the former spanish east indies, Nueva Castilla aka Luzon now the Province of Selurong..but the biggest factor is because of the majapahit nostalgia of the population there
