DBWI : Charles I executed.

What if Charles I was taken back by the Parliamentarians and executed? Maybe the republicans would have been able to take Scotland as well, as the royalists wouldn't have an equivalent figurehead.

But what would have changed? Maybe France would have been even more eager to go in war with the Republic of England, as Louis XIV and his grand son Louis XV would have been quite worry about a people able to just kill his sovereign.

I think Ireland would have been even more eager to associate themselves with the cause of royalty. Possibly a lot more military force would be needed, so there would have been too many troops there, for the conquest of Florida to be feasible.

Scotland might have been taken the chance to disassociate themselves. The independence of Scotland was taken seriously back then.

I don't really see the French going so against their self interest. The Republic would still have been eager for at least a nominal ally against Spain, and so would France.

I can see Henrietta Maria refusing to return to Britain. Which would have probably made everything far easier for the Republic!
