DBWI: Carlos Estevez becomes an actor

So this idea came up when I was watching the latest 30 for 30 documentary "Wild Things" about that great Indians team from the mid-90s, the one that finally brought titles to Cleveland in those two dramatic Series against the Braves and that flash-in-the-pan Marlins team. We all remember Estevez's appearance in relief against the Marlins in Game 7 that year as well as his strong Game 6 performance against the Braves that pushed the Series to seven so the Tribe could come back from that 3-1 hole. People even created that Wild Thing picture with Estevez in the famous role of Wild Thing Vaughn, though I can't imagine anyone but Robert Downey Jr. playing Wild Thing.

Anyway, Estevez comes from a family of actors. Supposedly he almost went that route instead of working his way through the baseball ranks. Would Cleveland still be waiting for a World Series title? Would Estevez have been a success as an actor? I know he credits baseball with keeping him from going down a "dark path," one he may have gone down in the world of film.

I can't believe he is still playing.

Will he ever retired?

Dude's 51 and healthy as an ox. He credits it to being a Buddhist, and he's really even helped guys like Tiger Woods get back to business. I think the guy is immortal, really.

That game between him and Roger Clemens was epic, though. Who would have guessed the game of the year would be between the Minneapolis Millers and the St. Paul Saints?

Don't get me wrong, Estevez is a damn good pitcher. An actor? I just can't see it. He looked so awkward during some of the commercials that he was in.

His father did change his name to one that doesn't sound Spanish to help with getting acting gigs. Even if Estevez tried to get into acting, I can't see him using a stage name. He's too proud of his heritage. Besides, assuming he did pick up a stage name, the English version of Carlos (Charles) coupled with the last name of his father's stage name (Sheen) sounds really awkward.

You do make a good point. Charles Sheen? Even Chuck Sheen sounds kind of off. His brother made the right move in keeping his name, even if he's fairly stiff as an actor and really only excels as wooden people like the Mighty Ducks coach.

A lot of people tried to draw comparisons to the Mighty Ducks and the Indians, although the Indians were the favorites and not really a bunch of misfits. The only misfit feed they had was compared to the Yankees, and after the Yankees got good, they were more like the Bad News Bears.

Wonder if he would end as a part of the brat pack with sanders, lowe and maccino, he is the age group and his pre buddist personality was similar to that(heck he meet buddism thanks to that japanese prospect is still his best friend) so thing would be different, in his early years interview he have the personality so i can imagine being actor in tv comedies and comedy films, like the cool uncle or friend in that way.

So, after thinking about it a bit I may have a possible POD...

There was a movie that he starred in with his father (was in the year 1974) and, from what I have heard, some of the interactions and experiences Estevez had during the movie production really left an impression on him. I don't have the text in front of me to describe all of the details but to make the long story short that production, coupled with his mother's influence, steered him away from getting into acting. Shortly thereafter, Estevez would start playing baseball at his school and would continue to do so into high school.

The last child of the Sheen/Estevez clan was born in 1967. A simple POD would be to have his mother, Janet, die during childbirth. IMHO, if his mother was not in the picture, then Carlos may have pursued a career in acting to remain close to his father.

Yeah, I guess it might have saved his relationship with his father. He's still close with his mom and siblings, but Wild Things went into a lot of detail about his strained relationship with his dad. Even today you can tell there's a lot of tension, though the fact that Carlos renounced Catholicism in favor of Buddhism may have a lot to do with that. Strangely his mom, a lifelong Southern Baptist, was on board with his conversion.
