DBWI: Capitalist USA in WWII

Although the USA was only Communist for about twenty to thirty years (depending on which historian you ask), the echos of that time are still with us, today. But, suppose that the Communist Party hadn't gained control of the House of Representatives in 1934?

Would we still have been so quick to join the Allies in 1939, or would we have stayed isolationist?

If the latter, would we have stayed out of the whole war, or would one of the combatants have given us a casus belli, and against which side?

They'd probably support the Fascists. What people forget about pre-34 America was that it was a lot more right-wing than the capitalism of today. There were immigration quotas and other such things already, and Eugenics had quite a big following. Also the economic inequalities were immense. Without the Grand Reforms I see America slipping down a more authoritarian Capitalist route.

Holy Lenin !

They let Texans on the Network now? Thought you guys had your own. Or are you just a nostalgic old Commie from the USA?

OOC: I smell a lack of butterflies (commie America, obviously a butterfly from earlier, and then a war which starts in 1939 with a fascist alliance), and so I move to make things a little more interesting. Go crazy!

IC: America collaborating with the Fascists? The what now? Now, call me an old reactionary but the pre-revolutionary system in America was salvageable. If we've kept our monarchy up to now, how was your liberal democracy unsustainable?

But I digress. What exactly can America gain from helping the Fascist alliance? The Italians and especially the Russians seemed pretty serious about autarky, which was damaging to American capitalist interests in those countries, obviously. And there's no telling how how ambitious the Ruskies could have become in the Pacific if they had crushed Mitteleuropa. Certainly, they had made noises about Alaska before the war.

Now obviously capitalist America isn't going to come riding to the aide of the Germans on a white horse, but personally I've always believed that Germany could have won without America. The biggest mistake Russia made wasn't the Hungarian campaign, it was invading Finland. They had no chance, economically speaking, and under the insane leaders we had historically.

OOC: The Allies I mentioned are the OTL ones from WWII, just with Hitler and Stalin's brief alliance being butterflied away. Hence, in the OP, my asking if the USA would still have been so quick to join the Allies. I don't see how you get a Fascist alliance from what I wrote.

I didn't: I got it from what Talkie Toaster said ("they'd probably support the fascists"). The DBWI convention is that by posting, you ae inviting other members to take your premise and run with it, stopping far, far away from what you originally intended.

Now, lets get IC before we smother the thread!
