- The Camp David accords centered around creating a lasting peace between Egypt and Israel and the question of the Sinai. There was some pressure in Egypt to get the Sinai back but after deliberating on the subject Sadat decided that having a buffer state between him and Israel was a better decision. Some say this was motivated by his anger over how egypt was treated by other arab countries during the talks and the attempted PLO uprising in Jordan.
In the final agreement Egypt would get the 10% of the Sinai closest to the canal, and the rest would be turned into the new state of Palestine. After this was agreed to their was a attempt to kill Sadat with a bomb by a low level PLO operative. Angered by this event the Egyptians added in the infamous 'right to return' clause that forced Israel to relocate their Arab population into the new state. This measure was apposed by the PLO, several arab countries, and a portion of the UN but it went through.
The agreement still rankles both sides of the conflict to this day with Palastinians arguing that they were robbed of their land and Israeli's pointing out that the resulting state is bigger than modern day Israel. But what would have happened if Egypt had simply taken the Sinai back in exchange for peace? If the creation of the state of Palastine and the 'right of return' had not been enacted?
