As you all know, we have already had 6 presidents in this century, despite that it's only 2012. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, John Kerry, John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer and then Mike Huckabee. The easiest way to do away such nonsense would probably be the reelection of George W. Bush in 2004, where he did win the popular vote; or the prevention of Kerry's assassination in 2007.
John F. Kerry / John E. Edwards (Democratic) 49.01%, 284EV
George W. Bush / Richard B. Cheney (Republican) 50.02%, 254EV
In 2004, President Bush wins the popular vote, but was defeated in the electoral college due to his narrow loss in Ohio. After recounts, Kerry is declared the winner, though he wins by only 3,230 votes. What would happen had Bush been reelected? How would he react to Katrina? Given his satisfactory response after 9/11, presumably he would not be that dumb like Kerry? Perhaps the GOP would lose the House as well as a few seats in the Senate in 2006, instead of gaining 23 and 1 respectively? How would Bush have handled the economic crisis?
While I do not think President Kerry do a really good job in his short term, at least he made sense, and he seemed to be improving day by day. His term was cut short when he was assassinated by an unknown gunman in March 2007, and he was succeeded by John Edwards, yes, that crook.
And then just before the Democratic presidential primaries, where Edwards was supposed to be running unopposed, it was revealed in October 2007 by perhaps his close aides and a former reporter of the New York Times that the President had sex with a White House intern while he was Vice President, and he fathered a child with her. Edwards is also found to have bribed the New York Times so that it would not report his scandal. Edwards refuses to back down at first, but when Bill Richardson surprisingly wins the New Hampshire primary by a 49-42 margin, Edwards decides not to run for another term, and Vice President Eliot Spitzer would win the Democratic presidential nomination. Edwards himself would resign in April facing calls for impeachment from Democrats.
In early October, following the outbreak of the economic crisis, President Spitzer was leading Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee by a narrow margin given his strong stance against Wall Street tycoons. Then in mid-October, Spitzer himself is caught in a sex scandal, where he used federal money to find prostitutes while he was Vice President. Huckabee wins the biggest popular vote landslide since 1972 in such an October surprise.
Mike Huckabee / Mitt Romney (Republican) 58.9%, 484EV
Eliot Spitzer / Ben Nelson (Democratic) 37.7%, 54EV
The GOP loses a large number of seats in the 2010 midterms, but still holds on to a narrow majority in the House, though its majority in the Senate is no longer filibuster-proof. Huckabee is very conservative on social issues, but is surprisingly quite moderate when it comes to the economy. Until this moment, Huckabee is still leading Brian Schweitzer by a 48-44 margin, though the race could easily go either way.
Any thoughts? How would the United States be different had Bush been reelected or had Kerry survived? If Kerry survives, would Bush consider pulling a Cleveland in 2008, given his enormous popularity today?
