DBWI: Bush had authorized the surge

Simple question what would happened if Bush had allowed Petraeus to go through with the surge in Iraq during the summer of 2007?
Obviously MNF-I couldn't have held the line much longer than late '08 , if Iraq was truely the forlorn hope everyone makes it out to be

The congress would have probably cut funding for MNF-I if Bush authorized the surge anyways, power of the purse and all

Well, it's very likely that there would have been a huge increase in casualties, and any gains would be at the expense of the effective "ethnic cleansing" of Iraq. Besides, talking to Al-Sadr and his allies did help, as well as negotiatiing with the Baathists to turn them against Al-Quaida.
Frankly, I'm glad Bush listened to the Iraq Study Group. While I opposed the war from the beginning, and am not a supporter of Bush in the least, this was a wise decision. Iraq's cost us enough blood and treasure already.
And you're right about the House not funding the Surge. Pelosi might be bendable, but Majority Whip Murtha isn't. And, with Ranking Minority Representative Walter Jones on the Defense committee (Not to mention Ron Paul and his allies), the surge would have a tough time getting through Congress.
