DBWI: British Empire survives, slave trade until 1920?

If Napoleon had not destroyed the British Empire at the start of the C.19th would slave trade have existed in the "Empire" unitl 1920?

After all they are not going to abolish something that is so profitable are they?

They probably would have kept it for longer. If they surrvivied, they would need all the money they could. They would obviously trade with the Confederacy, the U.S., and Napolean would want some trade agreement.

With a little luck here and a competent general there, they could have done it. I agree w/catboy, if the BE survived, they'd have kept slavery around for a long time, even into the 20th Century. I cannot fathom any individual or movement arising out of Britain during that era capable of defeating slavery.

There was an anti-slavery movement in Britain before the end of the eighteenth century - in fact a court case had already decided that slavery was illegal in Scotland in 1778. If the BE had survived, I can see that there would be the same sort of conflict over slavery between various parts of the empire as occured in the United States. In fact, it is likely that the pro- and anti- slavery parts of the Empire could support the Confederacy and Union in the American Civil War, leading to the break-up of the empire at the same time as the Confederacy achieved it's independance.

Cheers,
Nigel
