DBWI:Brazil and its Options

What if, instead of joining the axis powers in World War Two, Brazil had stayed neutral. Or what if they had joined the allies? Neither is impossible, since no one was quite sure what they would do in the start.

Come to think of it, why did they join the Axis in the first place? Was it because of the German victory at Stalingrad or the Japanese victory at Midway?

Neither...it was just the general sense of invincibility the axis enjoyed before the war turned on them in late 1943, when the industrial might of the United States began to reach its potential...

If the Germans lose at Stalingrad, they probably retreat back into the Ukraine instead of losing the Sixth army at Grozny and then seven divisions along the Volga...so this might actually prolong the war...

On the other hand, if Brazil doesn't join the axis, then the pro-allied factions of the Argentine Army probably don't launch a coup in early 1943 and there's no mini civil war of 1943...meaning that we don't join the allies in early 1944 along with Uruguay, Paraguay and Mexico...

If Brazil doesn't join the war not much changes...no South American campaigns of 1943-1944, no U-Boat ports in the South Atlantic...

The war might last a bit less, but its still an allied victory...just as IOTL...

You would need to have Plinio Salgado and the Integralist Party not winning the 1937 elections. Maybe if Getúlio Vargas' health were still in good conditions he would have supported the candidacy of José Américo de Almeida instead of remaining neutral, a choice that allowed the Army to support Salgado. Or, in the other hand, we could have also Armando Sales winning the election. After all, he had the support of the oligarchy from São Paulo. But then you would need all the other states accepting to have São Paulo with the political power again, which is very hard to be achieved just seven years after the Revolution of 1930.
