DBWI: Billy Madison not a success

As many of you know, Billy Madison in 1995 was a smash hit, grossing $273.6 million during its' worldwide theatrical run. Furthermore, the comedy won six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Adam Sandler), and a bevy of other awards. What would the comedic landscape be like if Billy Madison was not a success?

Adam Sandler doesn't get more carte blanche to get green lit what he writes. Ironically, this might have helped him as that 1998 movie, The Kosher Pope, wouldn't have see the light of day. For those who don't remember, it was written, directed by, and stared Sandler. It was about his character being unintentionally being selected as the new Pope, and his "comedic" attempts to fuse Judaism and Catholicism together. The movie was a box office failure and critically panned. The reviews were so harsh, that it convinced Sandler to abandon the film industry and go back on the stand up scene.
