DBWI: Atlanta Falls Earlier

What if Atlanta falls earlier? Would the victory help secure Lincoln's victory in 1864? How would Sherman go about getting them to surrender?

Considering how close the election ended up being, it wouldn't surprise me if this is enough for Lincoln to win re-election TTL.

The Republican Party wouldn't be utterly disgracied, leaving the next four decades to be named the Democrat Ascendency, until the emergence of the Populist Party, which led the way for the Labour.

It would certainly have sped up the fall of the Confederacy. Sherman did manage to defeat the rebels, but with Atlanta fallen and a more aggresive president in office, we could have seen a Union victory early than 1866.

OOC: And that's pushing plausibility. There was no way Sherman would have actually given up the war, not if he valued his career.

Nor is Little Mac likely to give up on the cusp of victory. He would be the one given credit for "saving the Union" AND he would have seen it as payback to Lincoln who "unfairly dismissed him" twice.
