DBWI: American Reunification

What do you think the chances of this happening are? Personally, I think that it will only be possible once the Confederacy has bowed to international pressure and abandoned slavery, otherwise I can't see the Union agreeing to any form of reunification between the States.

EDIT: OOC: Meant to put this in the after 1900 forum!

You are certainly asking for the rise of a totalitarian empire. The only leaders who have been able to unify their states division after so long have been Caesar, Justinian, Constantine, Charlemagne, and Napoleon. As such, unification will take place at the barrel of a gun. Just ask the Mormon residents of Deseret, they can certainly tell you about the nature of "Union tolerance".

As for the Confederacy, just consider that they didn't release King from prison until 1994 for "Communist agitation". They still haven't explained the death of his protege Jackson in 1978. Most likely they will declare a "State of Emergency" like they did in 1983....

I think it is just a fantasy for the intelligentsia. After living apart for so long, each nation develops a different mindset, values and beliefs. They just get used to their independence.

By now it is too late for the Americas.

Oh please, don't tell me you doubt the Obamessiah. With the approaching victory of both branches of the Change and Hope and Change and Did I Mention Change? parties in the North, South, East, West, and Germany, reunification is just around the corner.

Please, no need to be a spoilsport.

Never happen - the cultures are now way, way too different. I don't think you could have done it even in the 1890s, when the pan-American movement made some news (well, at least it made some news in the western US ;)).

Is that what they are calling anyone in the international community who opposes the invasion of Georgia by federal troops?

I would say any reunification after the Lee presidency is unlikely. The USA might have gotten Kentucky or some of the west back since Unionists remsained a force there, however well this will take a bit.

The fact is that since before the ARW there was really were little American identity. People identified themselves by their colonies and then States. American was like being a European, more of a blanket term only made potent by the common federal government.

Robert E Lee was a loyal member of the US military who served with Distinction in the First Mexican American War, however he was a Virginian first. This is not some farmer who never went farther than the local rail junction to sell his wares, this was a man of education and travel.

After the Econd War of Independence states in both countries were drawn together. The Confederacy was united by the need to rebuild and a sense of fraternity among soldiers from the victorious armies in what they achieved. In the North soldiers siomilarly felt closer to the comrades who shared in their suffering and resentment towards their politicans. I mean after all it was in large part the Veterans who ensured Lincokln would be impeached, lost war aside the man suspended habeas corpus and grossly violated freedom of speech.

The election of Lee as the second President of the CSA gave a great sense of legitimacy to the Confederacy. Davis for all his after the facy fame was not forced to stand for his office and was frankly unpopular with large segments of the populace. Lee carried every state in a sweep that has never been matched and would establish the Supreme Court and undertake reforms that helped end the Interstate rivalrys in the name of the "Confederate Good"

So you would need to butterfly Lee's presidency away. He was not crazy about the idea OTL so you would have to kill him. Maybe have some jack ass come in who would mae a mess.

Anyway I think it would be more reasonable for the CSA to break up into smaller countries than reunify after the war.
