DBWI-AMC Goes Under

I just bought a new AMC Eagle 30th Anniversary Edition. I already own a 2004 AMC Ambassador Golden Anniversary Edition. Sitting behind the wheel of my new car, I couldn't help but wonder what life would be like without AMC.
So what would be a reasonable scenario for having American Motors die sometime between its 1954 founding and the present day?

I thought nothing could get me to trade in my Gremlin, and then..........

Perhaps if the rumored merger with Renault had gone forward in the 70's (?80's?) we would have seen AMC trying to sell clunkers like the Fuego  & Alliance

. And we all know how that worked out when Renault tried to break into the US market in late 80's. ;)

Well, the Alliance with PSA Peugot-Citroen was certainly better than the alternative. I can't find anyone who has issues with the AMCitroens, especially the GS and the Ami 8 based Hornet. They're wonderful little cars, admittedly they're a bit unreliable and highly unconventional, but that's French Engineering for you.

Incidentally, My daily driver's a 2007 Hornet Turbo.

But what I wonder what would have Happened to Jeep in one of these Scenarios, especially the Renault-merger? Would Renault just have taken over Jeep and left everything else to Rot, or would someone else, like Chrysler or maybe even Fiat have bought it?
The Failure for AM General to get the HMMWV contract might also have done it.

Ah, yes. I remember a friend of mine giving his niece a Renault Encore for her 17th birthday. She hasn't spoken to him since.
The only truly good car Renault produced back then was the Renault 5 Turbo 2. Unfortunately, they're pretty rare, being limited-production homologation models built for rallying.:(

Pretty much anything other than OTL would result in AMC's demise. I mean really, how can you make such shitty cars and not go under?

Look at Chrysler and British Leyland, they've regularly made some of the worst cars in the Industry, and yet they're still around.
I know! How the hell does that happen? Whenever I see a Sebring, I feel sick inside. How do they manage to sell those piles of garbage?
