DBWI AHC the Democrats remain on of the two major parties

I'm referring to the Democratic Party in the United States that was started by Jackson and Van Buren. What are the most minimal changes to keep them as one of the two nationwide major parties?

Well, the fragmenting of the party in the 1860 elections is what allowed the Republican Party to take power and eventually ban all other parties to keep fighting the Civil War. Since the Republican party didn't get the majority of the vote, perhaps a Democratic party president could prevent such an event?

Well of course after the Civil War the copperhead faction took charge. It had no chance of winning any election except in a few white majority states in the South,

Then the populists became the opposition to the Repblicans, as they are now

I suppose you could imagine, but it sounds asb, the old ruling class being allowed to retake control of the South and former slaves being denied rights but could this have happened after the war and the murders of Lincoln and Johnson

Impossible, due to the Civil War.

If they didn't have attempted to stop the Reconstruction, even after Booth attempted to murder Lincoln, then they might have survived.

I meant, the slogan of their 1868 Convention was "This is a White Man's Country; Let White Men Rule", meaning they still wanted to overthrow the results of the Civil War.

Against this, the Populists were born, and, given the Republican Party became more and more business-fiendly, Radical Republicans found a new home with the Populists, and the Democrats ended up divided between both parties.
