As we all know the Second World War in Europe ended in 1944 when the last, stubborn, suicidal Nazi resistance culminated with the fall of the Reichstag to of all units in the field a joint Indian Army and Spahi unit. This outcome was preordained by the failure of the Nazi invasion in 1940, when the Nazis sought with incredible stupidity to replay 1914 with their new weapons of 1940. The result again as we all know was one of the greatest triumphs of French arms, but we know now that the inability of the Allies to invade Germany in 1940 was due to the logistical lack of preparation for assuming the offensive.
The result again was one of the most savage wars in European history, fought between the stubborn force of machine men with machine minds and machine hearts and the armies of the West in the urban jungles of Germany, a war that wound up rivaling WWI in gruesome nature and paved the way for the postwar emergence of the USSR as the great rival of democracy.
So what I'm proposing is something that is nearly impossible to envision: can the divided, frightened, treacherous leadership that was evidently attempting to kill Hitler as early as 1938 find a way to win the 1940 war? Germany was admittedly outnumbered, outgunned, and outmatched qualitatively. But is there any strategy Germany might have used with some effect to defeat France? Try as I might, I can't see them defeating the British, we know what the Royal Navy did to Herr Hitler's Navy in 1940 when he invaded Norway, his last triumph of arms.
If we want to get into outright Crack!TL territory, suppose that in the process of this defeat of France (and it would have to be a very short victory as we know that the Germans had no ability to wage a sustained offensive) the UK was driven altogether out of Europe, leaving its destiny in the hands of the Keystone Kops that gave Finland its reputation for badassery and the British altogether barred. What would happen in either of these cases? Could the Nazis have exploited Europe if they wanted to? Did they have any real ability to wage a sustained conflict with the USSR and UK?
