DBWI: a strong state in Britain?

With that little mess over the Cornish referendum two weeks ago I've been thinking about everybody's favorite backwater of Wessex and I just found out that one of their rulers briefly headed an Anglosaxon alliance with Mercia against the Norse kingdom of Jorvik. If that had been successful, could it have led the anglosaxons to unify? and would an Anglosaxon state be capable of fending off the Norman conquest of the Minor Normandy? (OTL London and the Southeast of England). I think they could have even gotten some colonies in North America but, then again, the Kingdom of Scotland still hasn't recovered from bankruptcy over their colonial affair and it almost split in the resulting economic crisis, so colonies might not be the best idea if your state isn't as rich as the Spanish Empire, France or Marrakesh.
